The Oaks

The Oaks

The look: Cue and Cushion bar is furnished with art deco pieces, twelve red velvet pool tables and juke boxes. There’s also a traditional beer garden, the classily chic Nineteenthirtysix bar and the plush Garden Palace Bar with an enticing fireplace.
The soundtrack: Subtle background music is usually café jazz style. Friday and Saturday nights, DJ’s spins classic and current hits in the Nineteenthirtysix bar.
Signature drink: The Pashmalice is a toxic yet refreshing cocktail mixed with vanilla, Absolute vodka, Licor 43, passion fruit, apple juice and mint ($14).
I’m hungry! Highlights of the tasting plates include grilled Cypriot Haloumi cheese ($9) and Szechwan Soft-Shell Crab ($12).
The wow factor: The size and history. A bar’s been here since 1885 and a massive Oak tree was planted in 1938. Legend goes it’s lucky to be struck by an acorn.
Best for: Anyone and everyone. Play pool, chat, drink, eat or pash in comfort and style.
If this bar were a movie star it would be: Owen Wilson – loud yet comfortable; down to earth and quirky with a traditional streak.
