Palmz at The Carlton

The look: In not quite the words of AC/DC: it’s a long way to the rooftop. But the staircase climb to Palmz is worth it. Swaying trees, pink flamingos and a Day Glo paint job await you at the thatched cabana bar. Initial impressions might suggest tiki but the effect is more Miami.
To drink: Despite the décor, there’s a distinct lack of umbrella drinks. Instead, you’ll find a small range of wines, Pure Blonde and Carlton Draught on tap, plus some bottled imports. However, there is a reasonable spirit selection if it’s been a G&T kinda day.
To eat: Head downstairs to The Carlton Hotel for a parma and other updated pub classics.
The crowd: clusters of 20-somethings dressed far too Melbourne, Australia. How about some Melbourne, Florida fab?
Overheard at the bar: “I missed my boyfriend, he missed his girlfriend – of course we slept together.”
Best for: Sunny afternoons and steamy nights.
