Gertrude's Brown Couch

Gertrude’s Brown Couch

The look: Like a circa 1970s rumpus room with its abundance of wood panelling, exposed brickwork and, of course, a well-worn brown couch. Much larger than it initially appears, the front bar gives way to a rear courtyard and upstairs performance space.
The vibe:
laidback and amiable.
To drink: A better-than-average selection of beers including a monthly microbrewery special. Those not mad about the hops can choose from a concise list of cocktails priced at a very unpretentious $10 each.
To eat: Comfort snacks along the lines of nachos, potato skins, toasties and the ‘I wish we’d eaten in Victoria Street’ spring rolls.
Bar soundtrack: Downstairs, it’s relatively mellow tunes at a comfortable decibel level. Upstairs, meanwhile, hosts a series of live acts ranging from acoustic folk to raucous punk.
Best for: Satisfying live music cravings cheaply – on Thursdays and Fridays, you can see multiple bands for the price of a drink.
