Ember Lounge
The Look: Blink and you’ll miss Ember’s entrance which leads to a warm, dimly lit, wood panelled bolthole. The cosy-looking carpeted bar faces a high banquette with matching stools while the rear room sports a more traditional dining layout.
To drink: A comprehensive collection of local and imported beers including the area’s native brew, Three Ravens. The wine list is wide-ranging, covering new and old world varietals and the spirit selection is better than average too. Try some Cachaça ($8), Brazil’s version of rum and essential to a good Caipirinha ($13).
To eat: Ember Lounge has three main food groups: pizza, paella and tapas which can include items like garlic mushrooms, stuffed eggplant and prawn skewers.
The vibe: Northcote casual. Best for: Laidback bevvies and low-impact bar-crawls. Located in Westgarth Village, the Ember Lounge is literally seconds away from a neat cluster of bars, cafes and restaurants, plus the Palace Cinema. Too easy.
