Der Raum
The Look: Striking in its simplicity, Der Raum mostly lets the drinks and the abstract art (by owner Matt Bax) speak for themselves. However, the bar is a definite talking point. Instead of sitting on shelves, spirits are suspended from the ceiling, bungee-style.
To drink: Bypassing a cocktail would be a lot like going to the beach and not getting wet. The extensive menu features recent inventions alongside long-forgotten recipes. Single-estate rum, hand-pressed juice, custom-made ice – Der Raum insists on top-notch ingredients. Only blacklisted drinks are out of bounds and that includes every alcopop imaginable.
To eat: All the kitchen produce ends up in the drinks but if you must do solids you can order in a pizza.
The crowd: Very much a bartender’s bar, Der Raum’s stockpile of accolades draws cocktail tourists from all over. Experimental Thursdays and monthly degustation evenings give devotees a chance to preview new offerings. Bookings essential.
